A new horse friend at Sweet Farm!
Join us in welcoming Brenda to Sweet Farm! She arrived last week, after being rescued from life as a buggy horse by a friend of ours. Her owners could not afford her care and had stopped feeding her, so it was urgent that she get out of that situation immediately...but our friend did not have a home for her yet! So she will be staying at Sweet Farm for at least several months, until her own accommodation is ready for her.
Brenda is a Morgan cross, and though reported to be 17, our vet said that she is actually probably somewhere in her 20s. She has had a very hard life. She has never lived inside and her body shows it. Her rehabilitation will be long and complex, starting with her teeth and her hooves. She is underweight and overworked, but we are already fixing both! Monday, she got her shoes off for good, marking the official end of her working days. She has also started meds for her Cushings and is already starting to gain some much-needed weight.
Sturgis, our 40-year-old Paint horse, was so incredibly excited to meet Brenda when she arrived. They are in adjoining stalls and pastures while they get to know each other. Their eventual introduction will be very careful, due to Sturgis's advanced age. Gizmo the Hereford steer, who is Sturgis's best friend, is also excited to have a new horse friend and visits with her through the fence.
